A Report On Cooking and Display Competition 2022-2023

Date: 05 November 2022

Since ages food has played a great role in Indian culture. Food is regarded as the source of life for all the living beings. Food provides us energy to develop and grow, be active and healthy, to move, play, work, think and learn. Food is the main source of nutrition to the body, but many of the foods that we eat do not have any nutritional values. Therefore, we should choose healthy and balanced foods that can provide enough nutritional value for the body. One such healthy food type is Millets. Based on this healthy food type Dream World School organized the Cooking and Display Competition on 5th November 2022-2023 under the theme of ‘Millets’.

The competitors were from the Classes V to VIII, divided into two different groups as Uncooked and Cooked dishes (using millets). 118 student teams participated in the competition.

Students assembled according to their teams at their allotted areas in the school premises at 8:00 a.m. We started the competition after offering prayer to Mata Annapurneshwari with the chanting of slokas by the students. All the teams were given 2 hours time to prepare the food items, i.e., from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Later, students were given 45 minutes time to display the cooked and uncooked dishes in a creative manner.

We had Dr. Shilpa H. (scientist in ICAR – Krishi Vighyan Kendra), Mr. Pola Karan (alumni of Dream World School and owner of the restaurant Pola’s Harbour Lounge), Ms. Anita Jain (social worker and a food enthusiast) and Sri Thallam Sridhar Shetty (dealer for the distribution of millets in Ballari), as the Chief Guests cum Judges for the competition. Dr. Shilpa and Sri Thallam Sridhar Shetty enlightened the students about different types of millets, its health benefits, its need to be cultivated and the record of millet growing areas in Ballari.

The assessment of the dishes started from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and was also open to the visitors, parents and well-wishers. We appreciate the patience and the aesthetic sense of the judges in tasting every cuisine and judging by their experiences. We hope that the students have gained the blissful skill of preparing food by combining, mixing, and heating ingredients for cooking. The competition was indeed a great learning experience to the students who were exposed to cooking which is a cherishable moment for their lifetime.
