A Report on Centre Festival - 4: (Folk Games)

 Classes - I to IV.                                                                                    Date 6 January 2023

Folk Games is the general term for a diverse group of sports and games whose common element is their status as being ‘popular’ or related to folk culture. Folk Games include especially traditional, ethnic, or indigenous sports and games. In earlier times, sport meant pastimes of the upper classes, mainly the nobility and gentry, who distinguished themselves from the ‘folk.’

Folk Games are important because they focus on a completely different aspect than Olympic sports do. Folk Sports aim to celebrate diversity and togetherness, as opposed to one person’s individual prowess in a certain discipline. Folk Games are a way of reminding ourselves that we are a community of people who are all different in their own way, while at the same time celebrating a certain culture and history, while also having fun and doing sports. India has a vast and unique culture and it is the land of traditional games like kushti, jallikattu, vallamkali, kho-kho etc.

On Friday, 06 January 2023, the Foundation Centre II organised a festival on the theme Folk Games. The main objective of the festival was to acknowledge the importance of folk games and encourage positive interactions among students.

The venue of the centre festival was the school quadrangle which was decorated beautifully based on the theme. The program began by lighting the lamp before the idol of Goddess Saraswathi. The ceremony was enchanted with a bhajan sung by a group of students.

The programme included power-point presentation, video-clippings, skits and dances performed by the students, an exhibition and an activity highlighting the methods and tactics used in folk games of India with the sub-themes Recreational Games, Court Games, Board Games and Festive Games.

The Centre Festival was a successful one in acknowledging the students with the information about the folk games. It was a platform for the students to exhibit their skills of communication by taking part in various activities enthusiastically thus building confidence to overcome the stage fear.
